Dangerous Repair

Broken Garage Door Springs?

If your garage door won't open or made a loud "bang", you likely have a broken spring. Stop attempting to open the door—it is heavy and dangerous.

⚠️ WARNING: Do Not Attempt DIY Repair

Garage door springs are under extreme tension (torque). Trying to repair or replace them without proper tools and training can result in severe injury, lost fingers, or even death.

Please save the $200 and call a professional. It is not worth the risk.

Torsion vs. Extension Springs: What's the Difference?

Torsion Springs

  • Located above the door opening
  • Safer (Contained on a shaft)
  • Smoother, quieter operation
  • Longer lifespan (up to 20k cycles)

Most common on modern/double-wide doors.

Extension Springs

  • Located along the side tracks
  • Requires safety cables (IMPORTANT)
  • Can be jerkier movement
  • Typically 10k cycle life

Often found on older or lighter single doors.

Can I convert from Extension to Torsion?

Yes! We frequently perform conversions. Torsion systems are safer, quieter, and require less maintenance. Ask our technician for a quote.

Spring Repair FAQ

How do I know if my spring is broken?

The most obvious sign is a loud "bang" from the garage. Visually, look for a 2-inch gap in the coil of the spring (above the door). Functionally, the door will be extremely heavy and the opener will struggle or fail to lift it.

Should I replace both springs if only one breaks?

Yes without a doubt. Springs are installed in pairs and have the same life cycle. If one breaks, the second one is likely days or weeks away from breaking too. Replacing both saves you a second service call fee.

How much does spring replacement cost?

Cost depends on the size and weight of your door (which determines the wire size needed). We provide exact upfront pricing after weighing your door. Be wary of "cheap" quotes over the phone that use undersized springs.
